What is Udalbide?

UDALBIDE Elkarlan Elkartea is an Institution comprising Municipalities in Euskal Herria. It constitutes a source of solidarity which was set up in the year 2000 by euskalzale (pro-Basque) institutions and town halls from Euskal Herria for the preservation, development and promotion of Euskera and Basque culture and identity. UDALBIDE is a legal entity.

What is Udalbiltza®?

UDALBILTZA® is the Board of Municipalities and Municipally-elected Councillors from Euskal Herria UDALBILTZA® is a forum which promotes Udalbide. It is a forum which periodically holds an Assembly of elected councillors (since the collapse of the truce in 1999, EAJ-PNV/EA councillors) from all the Basque territories, and makes declarations as it sees fit. UDALBILTZA® is not a legal entity.

Who does Udalbide consist of?

As UDALBIDE is a national institution made up of municipalities and municipally-elected councillors, it is based on their free and democratic adherence. Those elected by the citizens of all municipalities in Euskal Herria are entitled to participate. The UDALBIDE Board is reviewed every four years and any elected councillor may enter the General Assembly. Thus, all municipally-elected councillors in Euskal Herria are entitled to be called to participate in it. Decisions taken by UDALBIDE and declarations made by UDALBILTZA® are taken by members of the Governing Board who attend the relevant board meetings.

Why and for what purpose was Udalbide set up?

For the preservation, development and promotion of Euskera and Basque culture and identity throughout Euskal Herria. And to work to ensure that Basques from different territories may have the chance to familiarize themselves with, relate to and be able to work on projects that help to consolidate and promote a common Basque identity.

Where and how does Udalbide act?

UDALBIDE has created and set in motion solid and effective projects to promote Euskera, preserve Basque identity an culture in all its territories, foster relations between institutions and among citizens from the different Basque territories, and promote those initiatives which enable Euskal Herria to be visualized as a single territory. Furthermore, it assists and cooperates wherever possible with other associations and institutions, etc. both from Euskal Herria and beyond our borders, which adhere to the objectives set out by UDALBIDE.

What relation does it have with different entities from Euskal Herria?

There are many varied projects which are addressed to UDALBIDE via this official announcement every year. They belong to different areas: education, the media, everything related to agents of Basque culture, sports and the world of work, etc.
