Shepherds' meet in Burguete

Numerous shepherds and their four-legged friends came from all around the Basque Country to Auritz-Burguete in an event held to honour those who emigrated west during the twentieth century.

Hundreds of shepherds and their companions made their way to Auritz-Burguete on Sunday to participate in the fourth edition of `Ameriketako Artzain Eguna´, a day in which shepherds who emigrated to the States during the last century come together. Despite the poor weather, the programme of events was carried out in full, with only slight modifications according to a statement given by event organisers in which it was also indicated that among those attending figured the Councillor for Environment and Rural Development, Begoña Sanzberro, and the wife of the General Consul for Spain in New York, María Josefa Villalonga.


The mayor of Burguete, Josepe Irigaray, expressed his appreciation to those attending, those who had worked together on the event as well as the councils who had given it their backing, such as Udalbide, Artzain Mundua and the Government of Navarra; above all, he paid tribute to important voluntary work carried out by local residents, and those from neighbouring towns. For her part, Laura Igantzi, who led the organisation and was one of the key promoters of the event, was full of praise for the encounter, the aim of which is to `bring together those shepherds, men and women, who remember their experiences from that era and pay homage to them; I think we can say that that aim has been more than achieved.´
