The 5th World Congress of Basque Collectivities
Everything is ready in Donostia for the launch this Wednesday of the 5th World Congress of Basque Collectivities that will unite nearly 80 Basque club delegates from 22 different countries. Delegates will begin arriving on Saturday for this great gathering of Basques in the Diaspora that takes place every four years with sessions taking place on November 2-4. These three days are jam packed, not only with the congress meetings, but will also include the Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi seminar, a special session for scholars, as well as an exhibition of stands of various Basque entities in the Diaspora.[+]
The Basque armed group ETA issued a statement Thursday saying it is ending its 43-year armed campaign for independence and called on Spain and France to open talks.
The group made the announcement to Basque daily Gara, which it regularly uses as a mouthpiece. ETA declared a permanent cease-fire in January, but up to now had not renounced armed struggle as a tool for achieving an independent Basque state, a key demand by the Spanish government.[+]
This year's slogan was "Maitatu, ikasi, ari... euskala-kari" (Love, learn, use Basque, euskalakari!). AEK and Korrika named the people who love, learn and use the Basque language "Euskalakari".[+]
Jaialdi, the largest Basque cultural festival in the United States, reached its end on Sunday. The festival has been a great success, Jaialdi director Dave Eiguren says.[+]

Numerous shepherds and their four-legged friends came from all around the Basque Country to Auritz-Burguete in an event held to honour those who emigrated west during the twentieth century. Hundreds of shepherds and their companions made their way to Auritz-Burguete on Sunday to participate in the fourth edition of `Ameriketako Artzain Eguna´, a day in which shepherds who emigrated to the States during the last century come together.[+]

In a surprise move an alternative multilingualism report was passed at Plenary in the European Parliament today led by a coalition of MEPs, Maria Badia (PES), Ignasi Guardans (ALDE) and Mikel Irujo (EFA-Greens), and backed by the language NGO EBLUL. The alternative resolution overturned the controversial report tabled by Vasco Graca Moura (EPP), winning by 335 votes to 279 with 69 abstentions.[+]
DELIVERY OF THE 'ENE' PRIZE. Representatives of Eusko Ikaskuntza-Society of Basque Studies and of the Eskualdunen Biltzarra Basque Center of Bordeaux participated last February 4th in the Basque city of Baiona in the act of delivery of the ENE Prize 2008 to the Euskal Etxea of Bordeaux. The reward had been granted last December 3, International Day of the Basque Language (Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna, ENE), for the hard work of support and diffusion of the Basque language developed by this 'Maison Basque' along the year and throught the years.
